Made popular in the UK by Prince Albert, the Norway Spruce was first brought into the Royal Palace to decorate for Christmas in December 1840. However other sources suggest the tradition dates back even further, to when ‘Good Queen Charlotte’ set up a Xmas Tree at the Queen’s Lodge, Windsor in December of 1800. Bringing her childhood traditions from Germany, she decorated the tree with sweetmeats, fruits in paper, toys, and small wax candles – creating a yuletide spectacle.
The Norway Spruce remains the iconic British Xmas tree, with a classic shape. When positioned in the corner of your living room it fills your home with the heady aroma of fresh pine leaves. If looked after correctly, the Norway Spruce can also make a splendid outdoor Xmas tree, which can be decorated and lit in the garden year after year.
The Norway Spruce is an evergreen conifer and can live for hundreds of years, potentially reaching 40m.
