Holly (Ilex aquifolium)

With glossy leaves and shiny berries Holly is a well loved plant associated with festivities while their red berries act as a source of food for small mammals. Holly gives birds plenty of cover and excellent nesting sites, and hedgehogs and other small mammals may use its deep, dry leaf litter for hibernating. In the past the tree was seen as a fertility symbol and a charm against witches.

The size of each plant is between 15 – 50cm in height from the root plug.&l

  • Product Description

A popular choice for year-round hedging, English Holly (Ilex aquifolium) adds a pleasant splash of colour and winter coverage when the weather gets chilly. Holly hedges provide excellent, pollution-resistant windbreaks and are a great deterrent to intruders because of their dense growth and spiky leaves. Ilex aquifolium also serves as a winter refuge for local birds, who graze on the plant's characteristic orange or red berries. It's crucial to remember, though, that holly berries are poisonous to both people and animals.

When kept well-trimmed, Holly makes a great decorative hedge. It also works well as a component of a mixed native evergreen hedge to add much-needed colour to your landscape during the winter months. For an impenetrable hedge, Ilex aquifolium works well when combined with other prickly hedge species.

Holly plants need to be trimmed in late winter or early spring when the hedge is dormant because they grow slowly, about 10-15 cm annually. Holly hedging is good for exposed places and gardens by the sea; it likes full or partial shade and moist soil.
