The hazel tree is a good choice for urban gardens as it is small, colourful and resistant to air pollution with smooth grey-brown bark and hairy double tooth leaves that turn golden in autumn. Its flowers are monoecious although to pollinate the pollen must come from another hazel tree, the male catkins are long and yellow and appear before the leaves from mid-February. Once pollinated by wind the female flowers which are tiny & bud-like develop into ovals of fruit that hang in groups. They mature into the commonly known hazelnut and if the wildlife doesn’t get them first are a firm favourite for making delicious nutty chocolate spread.
Please note: all our trees are 20 – 40cm in height, depending on the time of year they may arrive bare or with browning leaves. This is completely normal and they will perk back up in the warmer weather. Our cell grown saplings can be planted all year round if given the right care and attention.
